Almost everyone in Nigeria today has an Opay account (beautiful wish). Opay has become part of our daily life, and we sure love it. It’s easy to use and saves you the long queues or endless bank network issues we all know too well.

But there’s one feature you may not have noticed. Opay actually helps you track how you spend your money. It automatically breaks down your spending into categories. So instead of wondering where your money went, you can see it all at a glance.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to find this feature and how it can help you manage your money better without any extra effort.

Why This Feature Is Important

Let’s be honest, sometimes, you open your Opay wallet, and the balance looks like it just disappeared overnight. You can’t even remember if it was data, airtime, or that one urgent transfer your friend asked for. It happens to everyone.

That’s why this feature is such a lifesaver. Opay keeps tabs on how you spend, it just watches and organizes everything neatly for you. Each time you buy airtime, pay for data, send money, or pay for Netflix subscription, Opay adds it to your expense record and sorts it into clear categories.

Why does that matter? Because it helps you see where your money really goes. You might think you’re just buying small airtime here and there until you realize you’ve spent ₦15,000 in one month topping up. Or maybe you’ll discover that your data plan is quietly taking a bigger bite out of your budget than you thought.

In short, this feature gives you the money mirror every adult in Nigeria secretly needs. And once you can see how you spend, you can start to make smarter choices.

The 10 Categories of Expenses and Income on the Opay App

 1. Money Received

This is every naira that comes into your Opay account, transfers from friends, clients, or anyone who sends you money. This and the next category is the only income you can count on. They are the nice green alerts. The rest (except drops of interests and cashbacks) are the red debit alerts we all dread.

 2. Bank Deposit

It’s same as money received except it’s strictly from other banks that are not Opay.

 3. Cashback

Who doesn’t love a little bonus? This is where Opay records every bonus you get when you recharge or subscribe. It’s basically free money.

 4. Airtime

Every airtime purchase you make lives here.

 5. Transfer to Bank

This shows all the times you moved money out of your Opay wallet to another bank.

 6. Mobile Data

If you ever buy data bundles through Opay, those transactions are logged here. It’s your reminder of just how much your scrolling costs you monthly, which is the reason why you’re yet to build a mansion for your parents.

 7. OPay Card Payment

This tracks all payments you make using your Opay debit card, whether it’s shopping online, paying at a POS, or swiping at a restaurant.

 8. Money Sent

This shows every amount you’ve sent to others.

 9. Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL)

This is that ₦50 fee the government takes whenever you transfer money between banks. It’s not Opay’s fault, it’s the official tithe of every electronic transaction in Nigeria.

 10. USSD Charge

If you’ve ever used a USSD code (like dialing *955#) to complete a transaction instead of the app, this fee pops up here. It’s a small cost for choosing the old-school shortcut.

And honestly, that’s something we all need. Because if you ever find yourself asking, “Who’s eating my money?” Opay will gladly point the finger. You might be surprised to find out it wasn’t the devil, it was airtime and MTN data all along. All due respect to MTN (or not)

Use this Opay feature often, maybe, just maybe, you’ll start making wiser money decisions.
